Negotiating without losing the offer
The fear that kills negotiations is not the asking — it is asking badly. A clean, respectful counter almost never costs you the offer; a vague, emotional, or late one sometimes does.
Say this
"Thank you — I am excited about the role. Based on my research and the scope we discussed, I was targeting the upper part of the range. Is there flexibility?" Short, warm, data-anchored. Then stop talking.
Never say this
"I need X because my rent went up." Personal costs are not leverage. Also avoid ultimatums you would not accept, and never negotiate after verbally accepting — that is the one move that reliably burns trust.
